The interim Director General of the HSE John Connaghan is to leave the service at the end of the year.
He will take up a new job on his return to Scotland.
Mr Connaghan was appointed as deputy Director General and Chief Operating Officer in August last year.
In May of this year, he took over as interim HSE Director General following the decision by Tony O'Brien to step down.
Minister for Health Simon Harris has asked Deputy Director General Anne O'Connor to occupy the role until the recruitment process for a new Director General concludes in the new year.
The position of the Director General has been advertised with applications due to close in early January.
