Police in Rome have arrested a man in connection with the assault of Irish man Sean Cox in Liverpool last April.

Mr Cox, from Dunboyne in Co Meath, was left in a critical condition after receiving head injuries near Anfield ahead of a Champions League match involving Liverpool and Roma.

Merseyside Police said the man, who is 30, was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of assault following the incident.

The man appeared in court in Rome on Saturday 6 October and has been remanded ahead of an extradition hearing.

Mr Cox had been placed in a coma following the attack outside a pub near Anfield stadium, shortly before kick-off. He regained consciousness in July.

Liverpool players displayed a banner for him in May.

Two other men have already been charged in relation to the incident.

21-year-old Filippo Lombardi was charged with violent disorder and remanded in custody to appear at Preston Crown Court on Wednesday 10 October ahead of a trial due to begin Thursday.

Daniele Sciusco, 29, admitted violent disorder and was jailed for two-and-a-half years on 24 August.
