A special meeting of Cork City Council is to take place next month to facilitate any potential Presidential candidates who are seeking the nomination of the local authority.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Mick Finn, confirmed the meeting following a number of people contacting the Council seeking its nomination to run.

In a statement, Councillor Finn said the decision was taken following consultation with political party leaders.

It was agreed that anyone seeking a nomination will be requested to formally express their interest to Cork City Council in advance of the meeting.

Once this is received, the prospective candidates will be issued details on the format of the presentation.

The exact date of the meeting will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Candidates interested in running for the presidency must be nominated by four local authorities or 20 members of the Oireachtas.

However, they can't be formally nominated until the official Presidential Election order is issued by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government.
