The general outline of legislation around managing the risk posed by sex offenders has been given the green light by Government.

It will provide a legal basis for the electronic monitoring of these offenders after they leave prison.

This means the courts would have the power to order the electronic tagging of high-risk offenders.

The new legislation would also allow the disclosure of information about sex offenders to a limited number of people in certain circumstances.

This would include the name, address and threat posed by the offender.

The disclosure would be made to the minimum number of people necessary to avert a risk.

The legislation will now be examined by the Oireachtas Justice Committee.
