An Improvised Explosive Device was made safe by the army in the Henry Street area of Limerick city early this morning.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 1.30am at the request of gardaí.

The area was declared safe at 4am after the viable device was made safe and removed to a secure military installation for further examination.

It was the fifth viable IED the army has made safe this year.
