Emergency services arrived on Watson Road at about 12.15am this morning (1.15pm Friday Irish time) to find Mr Walsh injured on the footpath outside his home.
He was critically injured with a stab wound to his neck and died at the scene despite efforts by police and paramedics to save him.
It is understood that Mr Walsh and Ms Cahill became engaged a few weeks ago.
Police said a fight broke out at their home, where three women and a man were present, after a second man, who was known to the women, arrived at the house.
That man - a 36 year-old from Revesby in New South Wales - was also arrested. He has since been released from police custody, and is assisting police with their inquiries.
New South Wales Police are liaising with the Irish Consulate in Sydney in connection with the case.
