Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for what they said was an unprovoked knife attack on a woman in her 70s in Ballyfermot in west Dublin this morning.
The 72-year-old woman sustained critical stab wounds after she answered a call to her home around 9:30am at Oranmore Road in Ballyfermot.
When she opened the door, the woman was stabbed a number of times in the upper body, and two men were seen running from the scene shortly afterwards.
She was taken to St James's Hospital, where she is in a critical condition.
The scene has been preserved and no arrests have been made.
Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the attack, but suspect it may not have been robbery.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01-666-7200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any garda station.
