Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has said everything is being done to prevent the gardaí going on strike.

Ms Fitzgerald said she will be inviting the Garda Representative Association to meet her this week.

"I certainly want to have further discussion to understand the concerns", adding that it is "all about negotiations and discussions and making progress this week".

The GRA last week voted to take industrial action following the rejection of pay proposals negotiated with the Department of Justice.

The action includes "a unilateral withdrawal of services" on 4, 11, 18 and 25 November.

Ms Fitzgerald said the Government is conscious of the difficulties facing gardaí but it has to think of the wider public sector.

"My focus is on negotiation and dealing with the concerns raised and doing everything possible, within certain confines."
