Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Liam MacDaid due to ill health.

Bishop MacDaid was ordained as Bishop of Clogher - a cross-border diocese which includes the counties of Monaghan, Fermanagh and portions of Tyrone, Donegal, Louth and Cavan - in July 2010.

Born in 1945, Bishop MacDaid is a native of Bundoran in Co Donegal.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1969.

Archbishop Eamon Martin has led the tributes to Bishop MacDaid, highlighting his advocating of "greater road safety awareness across the island".
