New figures show that half of all homeless accommodation in the Dublin region is concentrated in inner city areas.
The statistics come as Minister for Housing Simon Coveney prepares to announce the extra allocation of emergency beds in the capital.
The figures, which were released by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive under Freedom of Information show that areas between the canals had 2,180 adults and children in emergency accommodation - just over half the total.
This includes the postcodes of Dublin 1, 2, 7 and 8 and covers half of all adults and children in hotels, B&Bs and hostel accommodation on one night earlier this month.
Dublin 1, which covers the north inner city had the highest amount with 866 people and Dublin 8 in the south city was next on 666.
By contrast Dublin 4 which includes Ringsend and Ballsbridge had just 78 emergency places.
Dublin 6W, which includes Templeogue, and Dublin 10, which includes Ballyfermot, had none.
The whole area of south county Dublin, which includes Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock, had only 178 places.
North county Dublin, including Swords and Donabate, had 341 places.
Dublin 9, which includes Drumcondra and Ballymun, had a high number in hotel accommodation with a total of 398 adults and children.
Appeal to religious congregations to help with housing issue
Mr Coveney has appealed to religious congregations to provide vacant properties to help tackle the housing and homeless crisis.
He was responding to questions from Independent Senator Victor Boyhan at this morning's Oireachtas Housing, Planning and Local Government Committee meeting.
Mr Coveney said: "If there are any religious congregations listening, and you have properties that are no longer in use, or you are looking to vacate in the coming months, we are interested in talking to you and please make contact with us directly."
He said he had asked and invited the religious congregations to meet him in Galway and was approached after that meeting by religious congregations with offers.
