The discovery of the body of a man in woods in Co Kildare is being treated as suspicious.

The body was found by people walking in Rahin Woods near Carbury at about 8.45pm last night.

It was partially buried and covered by undergrowth near two popular trails through the forest.

The area was sealed off and the Garda Technical Bureau was called in.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster carried out a preliminary examination of the scene this afternoon.

The body was then removed to Naas General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

It appears the man's remains may have been in the woods for up to month and gardaí believe that he died violently.

One line of inquiry is that the he had a falling out with gangland criminals over money.

An incident room has been set up at Leixlip Garda Station and gardaí are appealing for anyone with information - in particular to anyone who visited Rahin Wood during the month of August - to contact them at 01-6667800 or on the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

Detectives from Dublin's south inner city investigating the disappearance of Philip Finnegan - a 24-year-old man who was last seen on 10 August - are also liaising with the investigation team.
