Child and Family Agency Tusla has begun an investigation in the death of a teenager in its care.

It is understood the 17-year-old was found on Trinity Street in Dublin in the early hours of Monday morning.

He was taken to St James's Hospital where he died.

In a statement, Chief Executive Fred McBride said an internal review will take place in line with established procedures.

He said the National Review Panel and the Health Information and Quality Authority have been notified in accordance with national protocol.

Mr McBride extended his sympathies to the teenager's family and said the loss of any young person is a tragedy for the whole community.

He said Tusla is offering support to the teenager's family and anyone impacted by his death.
