A man convicted of killing an Irishman in an attack in Perth over two years ago has successfully appealed the length of his sentence.
The Court of Appeal in Western Australia today cut the jail term given to 24-year-old Abbas Al Jrood by two years, ruling that the initial sentence was too severe.
Al Jrood was originally sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of unlawfully killing Thomas Keaney from Ballyconneely in Co Galway.
The 23-year-old was hit once on the back of the head by Al Jrood during a row in a kebab shop in Northbridge on 17 December 2013.
Mr Keaney, who was in Australia on a working visa, fell and hit his head on the ground.
He died ten days later in hospital.
In a unanimous decision, President of the Court of Appeal Carmel McLure said today that a seven year sentence was appropriate.
She said this was because of Al Jrood's youth, prior good character, remorse and minimal risk of re-offending.
