A 41-year-old man has died in a shooting incident in a house at the Ballyphehane area of Cork city.

Emergency services were notified at around 4.30pm.

It is understood the man lived alone at the house and was with another man when the shooting occurred.

The man's body has been removed from the house at Plunkett Road and the scene has been sealed off.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster earlier carried out a preliminary examination.

She is due to carry out a post-mortem examination on the man's body at Cork University Hospital tomorrow.

One theory, which investigating gardaí are believed to be examining, is that the gun was discharged accidentally.

The other man who was in the house at the time is said to be assisting gardaí with their investigation and is at Togher Garda station.

Gardaí have said they are "not looking for anyone in relation to the incident at this time".
