Gardaí have denied homeless people are being prevented from sleeping near Dublin's GPO.

The Inner City Helping Homeless group said they have been informed that two men who usually sleep in the area of the building were moved on by gardaí.

Spokesperson Anthony Flynn said there had been four gardaí on duty outside the landmark building recently in advance of St Patrick's Day, Easter and 1916 celebrations.

"Obviously there's a big increase in the numbers of people coming into the country and they don't want people to see the problems we have," he said.

He said this followed the boarding up of the front of the Customs House where a number of homeless people had regularly found shelter.

A garda spokesperson said there was no policy of stopping people from sleeping at the GPO but there has been an increase in security.
