Former Garda commissioner Lawrence 'Larry' Wren has died at his home in Castleknock, Dublin.

Mr Wren served as Garda Commissioner between February 1983 and November 1987. 

As Deputy Garda Commissioner, Mr Wren led the inquiry into the phone tapping scandal in the 1980s.

During his career, Mr Wren was also involved in the investigation into the 1974 Dublin bombings. 

He is survived by his wife Maureen Lee and daughters Mary and Anne.
