Two men have been arrested following an armed robbery at a post office in Co Carlow.

An employee was assaulted during the robbery at Leighlinbridge Post Office at around 10am.

Two men, one armed with what is believed to have been a firearm and the other with a hammer, left the post office with an amount of cash.

The men were both wearing balaclavas and left the scene in what was described as a white Honda.

A car was later found on fire near the Burrin Manor housing estate in Carlow and two men, both aged 27, were arrested close to the area.

They are being held at Carlow and Thomastown Garda stations and an amount of money was recovered.
