The Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan has said the gardaí will continue to investigate each missing person’s case, no matter how long-running or difficult the cases may be.

Speaking at a ceremony at Farmleigh to mark National Missing Persons' day, she added that advances in technology such as DNA profiling may help to solve historic cases.

The Commissioner also appealed for anyone with any information, which could help any missing person’s case, to come forward.

Earlier the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald welcomed families to Farmleigh on what she described as a "very special, very important and very difficult" day.

Ms Fitzgerald said it was important that the State recognises an issue which affects so many citizens.
