Gilmore appointed EU Envoy in Colombia

Former tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has been appointed as EU Envoy for the Peace Process in Colombia.

Federica Mogherini informed Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos of her intention to appointed Mr Gilmore at a meeting in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a statement, Ms Mogherini said: "Mr Gilmore's direct involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process makes him an ideal envoy. It is a signal to the Colombians that the EU is standing by their efforts to put an end to one of the longest running and most murderous conflicts in the world. This is a unique opportunity that must not be lost."

Man arrested over Kildare death released without charge

A man in his 20s arrested in connection to the death of a man in Celbridge, Co Kildare has been released without charge. A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Noel Winterlich, 37, was found with head injuries at Willowbrook Park at 8.50pm on 29 September, he was pronounced dead just before 10.30pm.

Gardaí said the results of the post mortem examination will not be disclosed for operational reasons.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses or anyone who was in the Willowbrook Park area of Celbridge to contact them at Leixlip Garda Station on 01-6667800.

Aer Arann 'confident' of agreement with Dept over islands air services

Aer Arann says it is confident that it will reach agreement with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to ensure there is no break in air services to the Aran Islands.

The company provided services as normal today, in the absence of an official extension of its Public Service Obligation contract, which expired at midnight.

Aer Arann says discussions are ongoing and it hopes that a final agreement will be signed in the coming days. It's thought the contract extention would be for a twelve month period.

However, there's been no comment from the Department, other than to confirm that talks were underway.

KBC customers experience problems

KBC Bank Ireland has confirmed that a number of their customers experienced issues with their bank accounts today.

Members of the public expressed concern to the bank after lodgements, such as wages, were not processed into their accounts this morning.

The bank told RTÉ News this afternoon that the problem has now been resolved, but would not reveal what caused the lodgement issue in the first place.

Two British women die off Spanish coast

Two British women have died after going missing during a late-night swim in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain.

Their bodies were discovered two miles from Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava, where they disappeared at 4.15am, Spanish search and rescue service Salvamento Maritimo said.

A British Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals who had been reported missing in Lloret de Mar on October 1. We are providing support to the families and those who were travelling with the individuals at this difficult time."

Salvamento Maritimo said the bodies were discovered by a rescue helicopter.

Two arrested over Tralee assault

Two men have been arrested in Tralee in Co Kerry following a suspected assault last night that has left a man in a serious condition in hospital.

A man in his 20s was discovered unconscious in the front garden of a house at Kileen Woods in the town at around 10.30pm.

He was taken to Kerry General Hospital.

Two men, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, were arrested near the scene a short time later.

Both are being held at Tralee Garda Station.

UN calls on Sri Lanka to pursue war crimes

The United Nations Human Rights Council has called on Sri Lanka to establish a credible justice process, including foreign judges and prosecutors, to investigate alleged war crimes committed during the long conflict that ended in 2009.

The 47-member state Geneva forum adopted a resolution, without a vote, that was led by the United States and Britain, and backed by Sri Lanka itself.

Government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels "most likely" committed war crimes including mass killings of civilians during their 26-year war that should be prosecuted by a special court with international judges, the UN said in a landmark report issued last month that formed the basis of the resolution.

Man arrested over Kilbeggan cattle theft

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Donegal in connection with the theft of cattle from a farm in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath.

He was arrested this morning and is being held at Ballyshannon Garda Station.

The cattle, with an estimated value of €100,000, were stolen in June.

12 killed in Turkish bus crash

Twelve people were killed in the Turkish capital Ankara when a bus ploughed into commuters waiting at a bus stop, Turkish media and officials said.

The bus hit passengers waiting at the bus stop in the Dikimevi district of Ankara due brake failure, the health ministry said.

At least eight others were wounded, the CNN-Turk and NTV channels reported.

Ankara governor Mehmet Kiliclar said the driver was in good health and had not suffered any kind of heart attack.
