Custom officers have seized eight million cigarettes worth over €4 million at Dublin Port.

The "Minsk Capital, NZ Gold and Pect" brand cigarettes are believed to have originated in Belarus.

They were discovered when officers stopped a Latvian registered truck and trailer disembarking a ship, which had sailed from Rotterdam last weekend.

The detection dog "Casey" uncovered the cigarettes hidden within the glazing spaces of window frames.

Revenue says the seizure was part of its ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes.

It said: "If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
