An initiative led by a group of taxi drivers in Kilkenny aimed at preventing suicide has appealed for funds to help establish a dedicated drop-in centre in the city.

Taxi Watch, a group of 15 drivers trained in suicide alertness, has helped 47 people since November last year.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Taxi Watch founder Derek Devoy appealed to other drivers around the country to consider taking similar action.

Mr Devoy said while the service is badly needed in Kilkenny, it is also badly needed all over the country.

He said if his group of 15 dedicated drivers can help 47 people in less than a year then he would urge taxi companies around the country to establish similar services.

However, Mr Devoy said in many cases there was nowhere suitable to take someone in distress.

He said the Thomas Hayes Trust is attempting to set up a drop-in centre in the medieval city for those at risk of suicide, and Mr Devoy appealed for funds for the centre, which is called Teach Tom.

Mr Devoy added that around €200,000 is needed in order to get the centre up and running.
