NASA has released an image of the side of the Moon not visible from Earth, which was taken by a camera on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) last month.
The image, taken on 16 July, shows the so-called "dark side" of the Moon, fully illuminated.
It was produced by NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on DSCOVR, which orbits about 1.6 million kilometres from Earth.
EPIC maintains a constant view of the fully illuminated Earth as it rotates, providing daily scientific observations of ozone, vegetation, cloud height, and airborne aerosols.
It photos the Moon and the Earth together about twice a year, as DSCOVR crosses the Moon’s orbital plane.
Pretty incredible time lapse of the dark side of the moon passing Earth from @NASA. American ingenuity at work! pic.twitter.com/JKep9bcxGQ
