A 24-year-old man who killed his uncle has been sentenced to life in prison.

David Cully shot 41-year-old Edward O'Connor at an organised fist fight in Finglas a year-and-a-half ago.

Mr O'Connor was shot twice in the back at the fight between two other men at Ballycoolin Road on 15 December 2013.

His sons witnessed the shooting.

The fight took place in a yard belonging to Cully's grandfather and he and his uncle were there to support different sides.

Cully admitted shooting Mr O'Connor but claimed it was in the heat of the moment because his uncle made a comment about a person he was alleged to have abused.

The jury unanimously rejected Cully's defence of provocation and convicted him of murder.

Mr O'Connor’s family remembered him as a good, hard-working man whose character was tainted by unfounded allegations.

Those allegations were investigated, but the DPP decided not to prosecute Mr O'Connor.

His widow, Charlotte, said in spite of this he never had a moment's peace of mind and always wished to have his name cleared.

Mr Justice Carroll Moran said nothing he could say would make any difference or bring Mr O'Connor back.

He expressed his condolence to the O'Connor family and passed on his sense of regret at a life needlessly lost.

Describing it as a heart-rending situation, he said he had no discretion and sentenced Cully to the mandatory term of life in prison.
