The Government has published new legislation to give victims of crime the right to information about their cases from gardaí, the Prison Service and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Criminal Justice Victims of Crime Bill gives victims the right to be informed of and seek a review of a decision by the DPP not to prosecute a suspected offender.
The Bill also allows victims to seek information from the Prison Service on the release, temporary release or escape of an offender in their case.
Victims will also have the right to receive a written acknowledgement from gardaí of their complaint and information on the progress of an investigation and any court proceedings.
The legislation will also apply to the Garda Ombudsman Commission.
Minister for Justice Francis Fitzgerald, who published the heads of the bill this evening, says the information will have to be given to victims in concise and clear language.
