The Government has nominated Judge Mary Ellen Ring to be Chairperson of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
The previous Chairperson of GSOC, Simon O'Brien, resigned his office with effect from 30 January 2015.
In a statement this evening, Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald said Ms Justice Ring will "bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position of chairperson".
As required by the Garda Síochána Act 2005, the nomination will now go to both Houses of the Oireachtas for approval before formal appointment by the President.
Separately, a new Chief of Staff was nominated to the Irish Defence Forces this morning.
Rear Admiral Mark Mellett was welcomed to the role by Minister for Defence Simon Coveney, who said "I look forward to working closely with him in the future."
Rear Admiral Mellett had been working as Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) of the Defence Forces since November, 2013.
