Almost 600 migrants have been rescued from six separate inflatable vessels by Irish naval vessel LÉ Eithne off the coast of Libya.

The rescue operation began at 4am Irish time around 50 nautical miles northwest of Tripoli when 101 people were taken from a rubber craft.

Five other rescue operations were also carried out and 593 people, including 92 women and five children, were taken on board LÉ Eithne by 1pm.

LÉ Eithne has rescued 2,729 people since its deployment on 16 May to assist Italian authorities in search and rescue operations in Mediterranean.
