The Irish Nurses and Midwives' Organisation has recommended acceptance of the proposed Lansdowne Road Agreement.

The union said the decision was taken although its executive council felt that the proposals were minimalist and could have been much more positive.

The INMO will now hold information meetings and workplace ballots with its members.

The process will begin on 29 June, with the outcome of the workplace ballots being known on 30 July.

SIPTU, the country's largest union, is also to recommend that members accept the Lansdowne Road Agreement on public sector pay when it is put out to ballot.

The decision was announced last Friday.

IMPACT and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation have also decided to recommend in favour of the agreement.

However, the Teachers' Union of Ireland and the Irish Medical Organisation council are to recommend rejection of the proposals.

The TUI is understood to be angry that there was no provision to row back on the additional unpaid working hours imposed under the Haddington Road Agreement.

IMO President Ray Walley said "this agreement does nothing to address the real crisis in our health services - the inability of the system to retain existing doctors and attract new doctors".

The council has also expressed concern that the agreement does not treat all workers fairly.
