A 17-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers last week has had her left leg amputated above the knee, the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust confirmed this morning.
Leah Washington was one of four people seriously injured when the carriage they were travelling in on the Smiler ride crashed into a carriage that had come to a halt ahead.
The incident happened last Tuesday morning.
The park had been closed since the crash, but re-opened today.
The other seriously injured victims have been named as Daniel Thorpe, a 27-year-old hotel assistant manager from Buxton in Derbyshire, Vicky Balch, 20, from Leyland in Lancashire, and Ms Washington’s boyfriend, 18-year-old textile design student Joe Pugh, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
Ms Balch suffered potentially life-changing injuries in the crash, and is expected to make a "substantial claim for damages" to support her recovery.
Another passenger on the ride reportedly had surgery to her stomach after suffering internal bleeding in the crash.
Chanda Singh, 49, from Wednesbury, West Midlands, was sitting in the second row of The Smiler with her daughters Meera, 26, and Vanisha, 29, the BBC said.
Meera told the BBC that the family returned home in a taxi after the crash before going to Manor Hospital in Walsall, where her mother had surgery to her stomach and is receiving treatment for a damaged liver and blood clots.
