Gardaí came across the sheep during a regular patrol when they saw a number of children chasing the animal.
The gardaí put the sheep into the patrol car and took it back to Kevin Street Garda Station where it was kept in a pen overnight.
Gardaí notified the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the sheep was brought to the DSPCA’s facility in Rathfarnham in Dublin today.
DSPCA spokesperson Gillian Bird said the sheep was in good condition but was hungry when she arrived at the facility.
She also said they hope to reunite the sheep with her owner, but that this would be difficult as the sheep’s identity tag was removed.
Ms Bird said it is possible that the sheep had been stolen.
“Her tag is gone. They obviously didn’t want her traced. It’s not like they’ve found her and they’ve tried to reunite her with her owner. The tag has been deliberately removed,” she added.
The sheep has been called Olivia Bond, Licenced to Lamb, by staff at the DSPCA because of where she was found.
The DSPCA said this is the fourth sheep it has had to pick up from Kevin Street Garda Station in the last 18 months.
