100 research jobs are to be created over the next five years by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

The college is investing €50m in an expansion of its research division.

20 new research lecturers, 20 associate professors, and additional PhD and MD students are among the new staff who will be recruited.

A new centre, called the Healthcare Outcomes Research Centre, will also be created to examine how research can assist in healthcare policy formation and to focus on surgical and healthcare outcomes

€25m will also be invested in new infrastructure, including new laboratories.

The new developments will feed into RCSI's research strategy which aims to transfer research discoveries more quickly into clinical use.

450 people currently work at RCSI's research institute.
