Three men have been arrested following the armed robbery of a post office in Co Louth, while in Co Kilkenny there were four arrests following a separate post office raid.

The Co Louth incident happened in Clogherhead around 11.45am when three men entered the post office, one armed with a sawn-off shotgun.

As they left the post office, raiders were confronted by gardaí and a 25-year-old man was arrested. A sawn-off shotgun and a quantity of cash were also recovered. 

Two further men (aged 24 and 36) were later arrested. They are being detained at Dundalk and Drogheda garda stations.

Gardaí are seeking witnesses to the incident, particularly anyone who was in the supermarket/post office in Clogherhead between 11am and 12pm. Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Drogheda Garda Station on 041-987-4200.

Separately, four men are being held following an armed robbery in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

The post office was robbed by armed and masked men early this afternoon.

Gardaí set up a number of roadblocks and stopped a car at Freshford a short time later.

They arrested three men in the car and recovered €16,000.

A fourth man was arrested at another location shortly afterwards.

All four are believed to be from Co Kilkenny and are being questioned in Kilkenny city.
