A 20-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of a 22-year-old man in Waterford city almost two years ago.

Martin Brophy died after he was attacked in a disused building between 19 May and 21 May 2012.

William Moran, of Connolly Place, had pleaded not guilty to the murder at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Moran told gardaí Mr Brophy was still alive when he left him.

However, Gavin Walsh, who was there on the night, testified that Moran had kicked Mr Brophy several times and stamped on his head.

A Facebook message sent from the Facebook page of William Moran said: "I gave that fella an old bad one. He said he was gonna slit my cousins throat - I think he is dead no word of a lie."

After deliberating for more than eight hours, the jury of three women and seven men delivered a unanimous guilty verdict.

Moran was sentenced to life in prison.

Afterwards Mr Brophy's father described Moran as a little thug.

He said while they were happy with the verdict, there was nothing to be celebrated, adding there were no winners or losers.
