The protest inside Cork City Council chamber has now ended

A meeting of Cork City Council has been abandoned for the second time in a fortnight because a protester refused to leave the chamber when it was about to begin.

Gardaí were present at Cork City Hall but the protest ended without incident after about an hour.

Around a dozen members of the People's Convention group occupied the hallway leading to the council chamber at Cork City Hall from around 11am.

They accused the council of confiscating 200 posters which they erected to advertise an anti-water charge march in the city next Saturday.

As the council's 5.30pm meeting approached, protester Diarmaid Ó Cadhla entered the council chamber.

Deputy Lord Mayor Kenneth O'Flynn approached Mr Ó Cadhla and asked him to leave the chamber but he refused.

The meeting was first suspended for 15 minutes before Cllr O'Flynn announced that it was being abandoned.

He rejected suggestions that the meeting could have been held elsewhere in city hall.

Mr Ó Cadhla continued his occupation of the chamber and left without incident after about an hour.

Cork City Council said it would announce tomorrow when it intended to sit again.

The protesters said they would be meeting to decide their next step too.
