More than 30 Irish companies are in Barcelona this week for the world's largest mobile phone trade show.

About 90,000 people are expected to attend Mobile World Congress, which got under way in the Spanish city this morning.

For those involved or interested in the mobile and wider telecoms and technology industries, Mobile World Congress is among the most important events of the year.

This year's theme is The Edge of Innovation, with talk around next generation high speed networks, connected machines and wearable technology likely to dominate.

But the headlines will most likely be grabbed by the giant device manufacturers who are there to launch and showcase their latest smartphones, tablets and smart watches.

Yesterday, ahead of the show's opening, there were high-profile glitzy announcements of new smartphones by Samsung and HTC, with Sony, Microsoft and others following suit today.

Amid the din of the 2,000 exhibitors across 100,000sq.m of exhibition space, a host of small and medium-sized Irish companies will also be trying to make themselves heard.

As part of an Enterprise Ireland-led delegation 18 companies have gone to the event, while more than a dozen more are travelling there independently.
