Seven new primary schools are to be established over the next two years to cater for population growth.

Four of the schools will open in September, with the other three scheduled to open in 2016.

The four opening in September will be located in Carrigtwohill in Co Cork, Pelletstown in Dublin, Knocknacarra in Galway, and Greystones in Wicklow.

The Dublin school will be under the patronage of Educate Together, while the school in Knocknacarra will be a Steiner school run by patron body Lifeways Ireland.

The patronage of the other two schools has yet to be determined.

The three schools that are due to open in 2016 will all be in Dublin City, in the Stillorgan, Cabra and Marino areas.

Patronage for these three schools has also yet to be determined.
