The British Ministry of Justice has revealed information about the murder of a Catholic man beaten to death by loyalists in Co Armagh in 1997 has gone missing.

Robert Hamill was attacked in Portadown and died later in hospital. Claims of security-force collusion in the killing have been investigated, but a criminal case was halted last year after a judge said the evidence was insufficient.

Ministry of Justice officials said data from the Robert Hamill inquiry had disappeared in the post.

Mr Hamill's family said it had asked its solicitor to seek an urgent meeting with British government officials about what they said was a serious breach of data protection.
