On the eve of the opening of the 51st Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, An Post has issued a stamp to celebrate the event.

The stamp features a rocket like that central to the inspirational story that led to the setting up of the exhibition.

In 1965, two UCD researchers, Fr Tom Burke and Dr Tony Scott, met a boy testing a rocket for an upcoming science fair in the US.

The moment led to a recognition of the benefits of bringing science out of the classroom and motivated the two men to organise a similar event in Ireland.

The new stamp was issued as the first students began to set up their project stands at the RDS in Dublin, ahead of the opening of the exhibition tomorrow.

There will be 550 projects on display across the four days of the event, with judging beginning tomorrow afternoon.

The event will be open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with this year's winner announced on Friday evening.
