A Sinn Féin councillor has been banned from driving for three years after being convicted of drink-driving.

Cork County Councillor Pat Buckley from Broomfield West, Midleton, Co Cork was stopped by gardaí on 9 June 2013.

Speaking outside the court today, Cllr Buckley said he regretted his actions and his choice to drive after drink.

He said he accepted the ban handed down by Judge Brian Sheridan.

Mr Buckley urged everyone out socialising this Christmas to respect the roads and to never drink and drive.

A Sinn Féin spokesperson said Cllr Buckley had apologised at the time.

He said he had put his hands up and has taken his punishment through the court.
