Twenty members of the gardaí are being briefed on the work of a special investigations unit at the Department of Social Protection to look at allegations of social welfare fraud.

Tánaiste Joan Burton and Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan this morning visited the group of gardaí, who began their work yesterday.

The gardaí are being seconded for 12 months to locations including Dublin, Dundalk, Letterkenny, Monaghan, Longford, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Navan and Sligo.

The unit is said to have generated fraud and control savings of €64.5 million to date this year, of which €23 million is recoverable overpayments.
