Focus Ireland, which helps people get accommodation, has said that hundreds of families have became homeless so far this year.

The charity began a campaign today to raise funds for people without a home.

With four weeks left to Christmas, Focus Ireland is asking people for donations.

The charity said that in the first ten months of this year 800 children and their families lost their homes.

In Dublin last month alone, it recorded 45 families becoming homeless.

Focus Ireland said that since last year the number of people sleeping rough in the capital has increased by 20%.

The charity said the main reason why the problem of homelessness is growing is that rent supplement payments have not kept pace with rising rents.

Focus Ireland's Life President Sister Stanislaus Kennedy said that while the Government has voiced concern about this, it could stop more families and single people losing their homes tomorrow with the stroke of a pen by raising rent supplement to match market rents.
