Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes has said he intends to raise the reluctance of the European Central Bank to appear at the banking inquiry at the European Parliament's Economic and Monetary affairs committee.
The president of the ECB is formally accountable to the EMC in the European Parliament, and ECB president Mario Draghi appears before the committee four times a year.
His next appearance is due on Monday 17 November.
Mr Hayes is a full member of this committee.
Yesterday, Mr Draghi was asked by journalists if he or his predecessor Jean Claude Trichet would appear at the Irish banking inquiry if asked.
Mr Draghi replied that the ECB is accountable to the European parliament and "not normally" national parliaments.
However, Mr Hayes is aware of at least three appearances Mr Draghi has made before national parliaments - in France, in Spain and in Germany.
In the German parliament he addressed the proposed OMT bond buying programme, which has faced considerable opposition in Germany.
Mr Hayes told RTÉ News that he will seek to have the European Parliament request the ECB co-operate with the Irish inquiry.
He said there is precedent for this, citing March's report by the Economic and Monetary Affairs committee on the Troika bailouts of four EU states, which called on the ECB to publish all the correspondence relating to the Irish bailout - a request it complied with yesterday.
