A skull discovered in a field in north Co Dublin has been identified as human remains.

The state pathologist carried out a preliminary examination today and determined the skull as that of a male.

The deceased has not yet been identified, while the skull has been removed to the city morgue as the process of identification continues.

The services of a forensic anthropologist are being engaged and detectives are checking missing persons files.

The scene in Swords was sealed off as garda searches and a forensic examination took place. 

The discovery was made by workmen yesterday afternoon.
