The first Minister of State for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan is making his first official trip to the United States since the post was created this summer.

Mr Deenihan will visit New York and Philadelphia during the five-day trip.

He will meet several groups and organisations working with and representing Irish and Irish-Americans in both cities.

The minister will also visit some of the Irish arts and cultural groups, and will meet the GAA.

He will also participate in some business, networking and entrepreneurial events in New York City.

The minister will address the opening session of the annual global conference of the Irish International Business Network, a non-profit Irish global business and entrepreneurial network.

There are more than 150,000 Irish-born people in the United States.

It is home to the largest proportion of the Irish diaspora, with more than 34 million Americans claiming Irish heritage.
