Over 30 health related research projects are to receive a total of €13.5m in funding over the next five years.

The studies, which range from stem cell research to fight pneumonia to combating osteoporosis in older patients with HIV, are being funded by the Health Research Board (HRB).

Awards of up to €330,000 over three years will be made to 32 projects, with four researchers or projects set to receive up to €800,000 each over five years.

190 projects submitted proposals for funding, with recipients coming from a range of institutions across Ireland, including TCD, UCD, NUI Galway, UCC, RCSI, Athlone Institute of Technology, NUI Maynooth and University of Limerick.

The HRB said the outcomes would be assessed based on a range of short, medium and long-term impacts.

Other projects will look at how to help asthma sufferers who cannot control their condition, new treatments for resistant types of breast cancer, and the impact of salt on kidney function.
