A study shows that one in three people over the age of 65 and living in their own homes experience feelings of loneliness.
The survey carried out by researchers at St James's Hospital and supported by Age Friendly also shows that loneliness also has an impact on physical well being.
The organisation has called for more to be done to address the issue.
It says that incorporating relatively simple, low-cost initiatives into existing support services could make a difference.
Hugh O'Connor, CEO of Age Friendly Ireland said: "Loneliness is a far too common aspect of life for older people in Ireland.
"More than one in three community-dwelling people over 65 report being lonely - and this is not just about emotional well being.
"Loneliness has very real impacts on physical well being and has been shown to increase rates of depression, hypertension and even death."
