Minister of State Kevin Humphreys has confirmed that the rent supplement will be dealt with in the Budget.

He was speaking at the Simon Communities in Ireland's "Home Truths: Women, Homelessness and Risk" conference in Dublin this morning.

Mr Humphreys said the Government is aware of the shortage of housing.

He said that in some ways the Government is a victim of its own success with the recent recovery in the economy.

He added that the rent supplement will be tackled in Budget 2015 on 14 October. He gave no further details.

Mr Humphreys also said the Government still planned to hit its target to end long-term homeless by 2016.

In relation to Simon's research into women and homelessness, it found that over 90% of homeless women have experienced violence, with 46% experiencing sexual abuse during childhood.

A total of 60 women were interviewed.

The conference and research are part of Simon Week 2014, which is a campaign to highlight the issue of homelessness in Ireland.
