Taoiseach Enda Kenny has told new Gaeltacht Affairs Minister Joe McHugh to spend 15-30 minutes a day practising his Irish.

Mr McHugh will attend an Irish language course in Donegal during the summer after it emerged he was not fluent in the language.

Several Irish language groups have expressed concern that the minister with responsibility for the language is not a fluent speaker.

Mr Kenny said today that Minister McHugh will be able to illustrate his proficiency in the language within a couple of weeks.

He denied that Mr McHugh's appointment was an insult to Gaeltacht communities and said Mr McHugh will prove that a language can be re-learned.
