An off duty detective garda has been praised for his bravery after he foiled a bank raid in Drogheda this afternoon.

The garda, who was unarmed, held onto one of the two raiders outside the Permanent TSB on West Street.

One raider had a knife, the other had a gun.

At one point the gun was pointed at the garda and he was told to release the other alleged culprit.

The garda refused and the raider with the gun made good his escape on a motorbike.

Garda Superintendent Gerry Smith praised the actions of the detective.

He said: "I commend him for his vigilance and for his bravery. He gave little thought to his personal safety and he held the culprit until Drogheda gardaí arrived."

A 49-year-old man was arrested.
