The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Emma Madigan has been appointed Ireland's new ambassador to the Vatican.

Ms Madigan is currently Assistant Chief of Protocol and has served in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 14 years.

She has served as Vice Consul in New York, Private Secretary to the Secretary General and Deputy Director of Europe & UN Coordination Section.

Ms Madigan has a degree in History and Italian and a Masters in European Studies from UCD.

The department said Ms Madigan was heavily involved in the State Visit of President Michael D Higgins to the United Kingdom last month and the hosting of the OSCE Ministerial Council during Ireland's Presidency of the European Union.
