The death has taken place of Dr Valerie Jones, a former Communications Officer of the Church of Ireland Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough.

Dr Jones was born in Dublin's inner-city in 1943 and attended the Protestant preparatory college, Coláiste Moibhí, before qualifying as a primary school teacher.

She taught in schools in Clondalkin, Rathgar and Ranelagh and earned a PhD from Trinity College for her history of the preparatory system.

From 1984 - 2002 she taught part-time in the Church of Ireland College of Education.

She served as Communications Officer for the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough for almost a decade until 2003.

At the time of her death, she was writing a history of lesser-known Protestant republicans.

She was a fluent Irish speaker and an active member of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.

Dr Jones' funeral service will take place tomorrow in St Ann's Church, Dawson Street at 1.30pm and then afterwards at Mount Jerome Crematorium.

She is survived by her husband Stuart, daughter Heather and son Mark.
